Al Russel Johnson was raised in Walhalla, North Dakota, where he was born on March 5, 1961. His parents, Bert and Betty (Patterson) Johnson, raised him. He was the sole son of his family, which also included two sets of twin sisters who were 17 months his junior: Sandy and Susie. His older sister’s name was Lynnell. Al’s boyhood was filled with time spent with his cousins, playing yard games at night, riding bikes to the pool, exploring the river bottom, and racing around on his miniature bikes.
He was a highly lively child who frequently startled Betty and gave her a few good frights. Al was someone who enjoyed taking chances, seeking out new experiences, and living life on the edge. He was constantly located smack dab in the thick of the action, whether it was a positive or negative development. In the eighth grade, Al had a broken leg; however, this did not stop him from being active; a week later, when trick or treating, he broke the other one. This did not stop him from being active.
This meant that both of the patient’s legs had to be cast at the same time. Betty always said, and you can confirm that by talking to the other people who prayed with her for her, that she spent a lot of time praying for Al. Betty was a devout woman, and she imparted her knowledge of the Lord to Al at a young age. This instilled in Al a love for the Lord that has remained constant throughout the various challenges he has faced in his life.
Al received his diploma from Walhalla High School, where he was active in the sports of basketball, football, and track. On weekends he would ski out at Frost Fire Mountain. He had a lot of energy and enjoyed participating in sports with a team. After he graduated high school, he was selected to participate in the football Shrine All Star game during the summer, and he continued playing football at Dickinson State in the fall. After living in Dickinson for a period of two years, Al moved back to Walhalla to work the family farm alongside his father, Bert Johnson.
