On Friday, May 5th, Anita Marie Gelston Ballek, the creator of Ballek’s Garden Center, passed away while her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were all around her. She was 92 years old. She was an intelligent, powerful, and capable woman who cherished her work and delighted in imparting both her knowledge and the stories that she had experienced to others. She will be remembered fondly by many people and will continue to live on in each of us.

According to many who worked alongside him, Gelston had a significant amount of influence in his role as chairman, but he never shrugged off his obligations. “You are given immense authority on the siting council,” said Derek Phelps, who served in the role of executive director previously. “And the proposals are sometimes in the face of great opposition, but what Mr. Gelston taught me and what he taught all of us – is that you have to have a process that is completely transparent; listen to people’s concerns, and act in a manner that is worthy of your position,”

Gelston was referred to as a “selfless and dedicated” public worker by U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, who had appeared before Gelston on multiple occasions when he was serving as Attorney General. “He had an indomitable dedication to the public interest,” Blumenthal stated about him. You may not have agreed with him all the time, but you were aware of his position at all times.
