Deborah Lawlor Obituary, Fountain Theatre Co-founder Has Died
- by Sophia Mia
Deborah Lawlor Obituary, Death Cause – The passing of our co-founder Deborah Lawlor was announced last night, and we are saddened to share the news. She passed away quietly, without any pain or suffering, which was a godsend. Because Deborah has lived, the world is a better place as a result of her presence here; this is the gift that she gives to all of us. Deb lived her entire life thinking of others before she thought of herself, which resulted in the enrichment and enhancement of a great number of lives.
Deborah is a model for making responsible use of one’s advantages for the sake of assisting those less fortunate. Following her graduation from Bennington College, she relocated to New York City and immediately became involved in the Judson Church and Caffe Cino scene in The Village. In 1968, she was a pioneer in the creation of Auroville, an international utopian community spanning 12 square miles that was established in India for the purpose of fostering human harmony. It is presently home to 3,000 people from different countries all around the world.
In the year 1990, she called Stephen Sachs to discuss the possibility of launching a theater company. They started their cooperation, which would last for the next three decades, by opening the Fountain together. Deborah Lawlor is the person primarily responsible for the existence of the Fountain Theatre in its current form. Her tender touch was evident in each and every play that we staged, and she also authored three of her very own.
She was the mastermind of our mesmerizing flamenco program, which included the production of hundreds of concerts at both the Fountain and the Ford Amphitheatre. More than that, she was a supporter of the flamenco community in Los Angeles, which was included in the stirring documentary film “Kumpania,” which was released in 2011. In her book “The Temple in Man” (1977), she translated the work of the French philosopher and mystic R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz on sacred architecture. In her books “Symbol and the Symbolic” (1978) and “Nature Word” (1982), she wrote on Egyptology and esoteric philosophy, respectively. She was also a writer. The idea behind this book was “the intelligence of the heart,” which is an outlook on life that exemplifies our good friend Deborah.
