Harris Black Obituary, Harris Black Has Passed Away
- by James Lucas
Harris Black Obituary, Death Cause – We are passing along the news that our dear friend and longtime member of the Harris family, Andy Black, has died away. It is with a heavy heart that we do so. Andy was a terrific athlete both in school and in his later life. He was also a good friend to have around. During his time as a student, Andy competed for the Midlands and was selected for the “possibles” team in the Scottish international tryouts. However, he was ultimately defeated by someone named Gavin Hastings. He played for the club from 1980 through 1984 and had little trouble picking up the game at age 10 or 15.
It is somewhat heartening to learn that he was not exceptional at everything; he was referred to as a “enthusiastic” cricketer. However, he was ultimately a man who could turn his hand to any sport; thankfully for us, he played for Harris. It was always intriguing to hear Andy’s take on the games when he came to Elliot Road to see them. Andy would frequently come to watch the games there. The phrase “one of the good guys” is used most frequently in reference to Andy, and I can think of very few epitaphs that are more fitting. We shall miss having him around.
He physically outperformed his position and always gave the impression that he had time on his side, both of which are characteristics of a good player. He was a remarkable kicker who could successfully convert kicks from any distance or angle. In addition to playing rugby, Andy was also a superb footballer, having been on the books of Brechin City in the late 1970s. To add insult to injury, he was also a good golfer, playing off 4 out of Carnoustie, which is no small accomplishment.
