Jack Greene Obituary, Jack Greene Has Passed Away
- by James Lucas
Jack Greene Obituary, Death Cause – We are saddened to inform you that another one of our cherished retirees, retired Captain Jack Greene, passed away recently. On behalf of the men and women of Erie Firefighters IAFF Local 293, we offer our condolences. After a number of decades of service, Jack retired in 1979 from the old Engine 8 at 23rd and Ash Streets. At the time of his retirement, Jack was our most senior retiree, having reached the age of 97.
Jack took great pride in his role as an older statesman; he continued to drive well into his 90s, was a keen golfer who chose to walk rather than ride in a cart, and was known for his outgoing personality. If you were to talk to Jack, he would be more than happy to repeat his age to you one, ten, or even twenty times! He never failed to greet you with a cheery smile and expressed genuine happiness at your arrival.
Jack was a proud firefighter, but he was also a proud World War II veteran. He had served in the Pacific theater of World War II as a Navy Corpsman in the Marine Corps. Jack was proud of both of these accomplishments.Jack was able to take great delight in the fact that two of his sons, Rich Greene, who is now retired from Engine 13 as Captain and Kevin Greene, who is currently serving as Lieutenant for Engine 12, followed in his footsteps and became firefighters.
We extend our most sincere condolences to Jack’s family and friends, and we are grateful to him for the service he provided to both his community and his country. Jack, we are going to miss you very much, but you can finally rest in peace now.
