According to information provided by Carter’s attorney Kim Stephens in a press release, the terms of Carter’s punishment include a year of probation, a fine of one thousand dollars, the completion of eighty hours of community service, and enrollment in a driving school approved by the state. Carter, a defensive lineman for the University of Georgia’s Bulldogs football team and a former top prospect for the current NFL draft, turned himself in to the police in Athens, where the campus is located and where the fatal crash took place, shortly after authorities issued warrants for his arrest in early March.
The crash took place in Athens, which is also where the investigation into the crash is being conducted. A earlier announcement made by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department stated that Carter, 21, would be facing charges related to racing and reckless driving in connection with the accident. Booking records at the time indicated that Carter turned himself in to the police at approximately 11:30 p.m. on the evening of March 1 and was released before midday the following day.
