Jim Davidson Obituary, Death Cause – James “Jim” Sanborn Davidson, 91, of Rutland, Vermont, passed away in a tranquil manner on Sunday morning, May 7, 2023, with his cherished wife at his side. He was the only child of Milfred and Ruth (Sanborn) Davidson, who welcomed him into the world on November 11, 1931 in Claremont, New Hampshire. Charlestown High School awarded Mr. Davidson his diploma in 1949, and Saint Anselm College conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Arts in History with the honors designation Summa Cum Laude in 1953. He was awarded an Experienced Teacher Fellowship in 1966, which allowed him to pursue graduate studies at the University of Kansas, where he ultimately earned a Master of Arts in History degree in 1974.
“Rutland, Vermont 1770-1791” was the title of his thesis project. Between the years of 1955 and 1957, he was enlisted in the United States Army. In 1957, he was discharged from the army with honors. Over the course of more than three decades, Jim taught American history at the secondary school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Between the years 1982 and 1994, he served Castleton State College as both the Assistant Registrar and Registrar before taking early retirement. His appointment to the position of member of the Vermont State Bi-Centennial Commission for the 1976-1977 State and National Bi-Centennial of the American Revolution was made by Governor Deane C. Davis of Vermont.
He had been involved with both the Vermont Historical Society and the Center for Research at the University of Vermont for a significant amount of time. Jim was given the honor of becoming a Fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences in the year 2007. Jim offered local history on a regular basis, both in print and in personal programs. He also had brief appearances on the History Channel and on the PBS show History Detectives. In Rutland, Vermont, he was a familiar face on the Rutland Historical Society’s “Historically Speaking” cable television series, where he held the role of both host and presenter.
Jim was a volunteer curator for the Rutland Historical Society in addition to being a charter member of the organization, which he had served as president of three times in the past. The American Association of State and Local Historians presented him with the national Individual Merit Award in 2015, and he went to Louisville, Kentucky, to accept it. This prize recognized his efforts in gathering, investigating, archiving, and curating the history of Rutland, Vermont, over a period of more than forty years. He was a dedicated parishioner of St. Peter’s Church in Rutland, where he served in a variety of roles, including that of Minister of the Altar.
