His life, service, and sacrifice will not be forgotten at any time. Today, we commemorate Senior Constable John Atkinson, who passed away on May 5 at 2:07 p.m. while serving his community. He spent many weekends putting up moonwalks and carnival games. He was slain in the line of duty. The neighborhood received a great deal of pleasure from the abundance of snow cone machines and cotton candy machines that he possessed. John also frequented the local flea markets on a weekly basis and had an intuitive ability to find great deals when he went shopping there.

His acquisitions included anything from chain saws to containers of laundry detergent to each and every kind of instrument imaginable. Even if he already possessed a specific tool, he needed to make sure he had a backup in case it stopped functioning properly. John’s parents, son, John Allen Atkinson, brother, Curtis Atkinson, and two sisters, Charlene Burns and Celia Birdwell all passed away before him. John is the only survivor of his immediate family.

Catherine Chambliss Atkinson, his devoted wife of 63 years, is one of his surviving family members. He is also survived by his two daughters, Sarah (Jeff) Bennett of Kingwood, Texas, and Ruth (Dan) Moore of Crestwood, Kentucky. In addition, he is survived by his seven grandchildren, who are as follows: Lauren (Frank) Atkinson Alexander of Conway, Reid (Cassy) Atkinson of Greenbriar; Catie and Kristen Bennett of Dallas, Texas; Lindsey (Adam) Hendricks, and Anna and William Moore of Louisville, Kentucky. Carson, Cash, Addie, Caroline, and Georgie are his five great-grandchildren. He also has a great-grandchild named Cash. Bear, his devoted dog, is another member of his family who will miss him.
