According to the announcement made by Cushman & Wakefield on Thursday, John Cushman III passed away at the age of 82. “Cushman & Wakefield is deeply saddened by the loss of John C. Cushman III, a member of Cushman & Wakefield’s founding family,” said Brett White, executive chairman of Cushman & Wakefield, in a statement. “John C. Cushman III was a member of Cushman & Wakefield’s founding family.” John was a remarkable businessperson and citizen of the world who had a huge impact on Cushman & Wakefield, the commercial real estate sector, and the larger community.
Cushman started working for the company that he eventually took over in 1963 in the New York offices of the company that had been established in 1917 by his grandfather John Clydesdale Cushman and his great uncle Bernard Wakefield. Five years later, he made the move to Los Angeles in order to open C&W’s first office in the Southern California region. Cushman Corporation Realty was established in 1978 by Cushman and his twin brother, Louis Cushman. The company had over 200 workers and 11 offices around the United States prior to its merger with Cushman & Wakefield in 2001. Cushman left C&W in 1978 to start the company with his brother. Even now, Louis has the position of vice chairman of the board.
Jeanine, their four sons, and ten grandchildren are the only people who will remember John Cushman after he has passed away. Cushman spent 60 years in the industry, helping to build the brokerage into the global enterprise that it is known for today, after graduating from Colgate University with a degree in economics. The university later awarded him an honorary doctorate in humane letters. Cushman served as chairman for global transactions at C&W up until his death, and he was in the industry until his death.
