Karen Cárdenas Obituary, Karen Cárdenas Has Died

Karen Cárdenas Obituary, Death Cause – On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the age of 80, Dr. Karen Cárdenas, who resided in Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away quietly in her sleep, after having been attended to by a procession of family and friends. She was the daughter of Vincil and Rosemary Hardy (Nicholas), and she was born in the year 1943.

Karen was one of the semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship, and she used her brilliant brain to pursue her lifelong interest in teaching and fostering intercultural understanding via language. She earned a number of degrees, the most prestigious of which was a doctorate from the University of Kansas in Spanish Language and Literature.

She was a published author (Para Empezar textbook and many essays), a member of ACTFL & NCSSFL, an Honorary Member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, and a Board Member of The Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, where she helped shape language in higher education policy for the state and region. She rose to the position of Department Chair at South Dakota State University.

Karen’s influence might be attributed to a great deal more than only her professional accomplishments. She was a passionate advocate for human rights, and in that capacity, she gave generously of her time and resources to organizations that fought for equality and gave a voice to those who did not have one, most notably the League of Women Voters. She was the most welcome kind of thorn in the side of Oklahoma newspapers’ Letter to the Editor departments, and she made multiple appearances in Tulsa World LTEs.

Her legacy is a multi-layered tapestry that is woven from her love of her family and her enthusiasm for learning. In addition to this, she has a passion for knitting, reading, puzzles, cards, music, the piano, and the performing arts. Her favorite animal is a cat, and she has taken in practically every stray cat that she has ever come across. The quick wit and dry sense of humor that Karen possessed frequently caused those around her to laugh until they cried.

She was kind, loved profoundly, and would be greatly missed by all who knew her as a daughter of Pryor, a real friend, a loving aunt, a valued sister, a caring mom, and most of all as one of the most generous and irrepressible personalities you’d ever have the honor to know. She was a daughter of Pryor, a true friend, a loving aunt, a treasured sister, and a caring mother. She was a true example of doing good in the world.
