Martin Hayden Obituary, Death Cause – The life of Martin Hayden has come to an end. We extend our sincerest condolence. Martin S. Hayden, the editor and vice president of The Detroit News, has firmly established himself as a brilliant political reporter and one of the most prominent journalists in the nation. When other reporters were accompanying the president on a trip to Georgia during a weekend in 1956, Hayden stayed in Washington and broke the news that President Dwight D. Eisenhower would seek a second term in office.

Hayden was the only reporter at the time to do so. In November of 1973, he made the News one of the first pro-Nixon publications to shift against the troubled president in a front-page editorial asking for Nixon’s resignation or impeachment. He did this by making the News one of the first newspapers to turn against Richard Nixon. It was once written about him in Esquire magazine as a “power broker,” but he disavowed the moniker.

He stated, “I’m no more of a power broker than any other editor,” and he emphasized this point. Independent in his thinking, he usually went against the grain of the other people of his time. While he was adamant about his support for a free press, he was against “shield” laws because he believed they exceeded the bounds of the Constitution. In addition, he condemned publications such as the Washington Post and the New York Times for their role in the release of the Pentagon Papers, suggesting that such actions could result in limits placed on the press. He stated, “I believe in press restraint,” and I agree with him. “There is a reference to us in the First Amendment, but it’s only three words long: freedom ‘of the press.’ The outcome of everything is dependent on it….
