Mary Huntoon Obituary, Death Cause – We are sad to say our final farewell to another Past President of SOHN, Mary Bigelow Huntoon, who passed away on April 25, 2023. Mary received her BSN from Duke University and her MSN from Boston University. Mary joined SOHN in 1990 at the suggestion of her sister, Anne Bigelow. Before long Anne and Mary became known as the “Sister Act” for their engaging and entertaining personalities.
An avid gardener and flower arranger specializing in creative interpretation, Mary was highly sought after for her presentations to local and national flower clubs. And those of you who were lucky enough to be able to attend her entertaining Fun Time Flower Making with Mary Funtoon sessions at Congress were fortunate to get a peak at Mary’s creative side.Mary is survived by her husband Dan, four sons (Tom, Jonathan, Will and Andrew) and two grandchildren (Charlie and Lily).
Mary’s contributions and dedication to SOHN were innumerable. She was a leader within our ranks serving in many volunteer and elected positions. Mary served as the 2018 SOHN Congress Education Program Chairperson; and for more than 20 years, she was a VIP at SOHN congresses. She rose in the SOHN ranks to serve as a member of the SOHN Board of Directors in 2007 – 2008, Vice President in 2009 – 2010, President-Elect 2011 and President 2012 – 2013. Mary also served as a member of the ENT-NF Board of Directors from 2009 – 2021 and was a valued member of the ORL – Head and Neck Editorial Board.
Mary’s contributions to SOHN and ORL nurses does not stop there. She was a polished author, editor, presenter and flower artist. Together with her co-editor, Lenore Harris , they prepared the first and second editions of the ORL and Head-Neck Nursing Core Curriculum in 1998 and 2008. Mary spearheaded and developed the physical assessment course, a long-standing recurring course, offered annually at the SOHN congresses.
