- by James Lucas
Richard Okabe Obituary, Death Cause – Richard Okebe died away in peace on April 22, 2023, following a swift but valiant fight against cancer. His parents, Thomas and Rose Okabe, welcomed him into the world in 1947. Rick considered himself to be a native Chicagoan despite the fact that he had spent the better part of the past three decades living in Utah. Rick, a prominent member of the Japanese American community, made it his mission to educate others about the Japanese American experience while also attempting to preserve it.
Over the course of more than 25 years, he put in countless hours of effort to assist in the establishment of the Topaz Museum in Delta, Utah. This museum is committed to preserving the history of the incarceration of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II and educating the general public about the topic. Rick was an incredible human being. Once, while talking to his wife Karen, his mother-in-law asked, “Who is going to marry you with two kids and two dogs?
The response that Karen gave was “someone who loves animals.” Even though Rick was not an animal lover, he went ahead and married Karen anyhow. This action reveals a great deal about Rick’s personality. Rick was the steady foundation of our family, always making sure we were taken care of and setting a good example for the rest of us. He modeled for us what it is to be a kind and considerate son, spouse, brother, friend, and uncle, but most importantly, what it means to be a devoted and caring father. His attitude of kindness and generosity knew no bounds, and the commitment he had to his family shone through in everything that he did.
