Robert Cargni Obituary, Death, Funeral And Visitation
- by James Lucas
Robert Cargni Obituary, Death Cause – Please take this opportunity to express your deepest condolences on the loss of Robert Cargni, who passed away suddenly this past week. It is likely that many of you are aware that Robert worked at International House for a number of years in the capacities of projectionist and programmer. Robert was a true cinephile who possessed a huge understanding of film art (in addition to projection), and he would frequently fly to New York and other cities to attend special screenings and seminars. At I-House, Secret Cinema hosted a number of events, and whenever Robert was in charge of the screenings, I knew that my prints would be in good hands.
One evening that I will always remember with a smile was not even part of my own itinerary. I was asked to assist in the installation of two of my 16mm projectors so that Paul Sharits’s experimental film could be seen. Obviously, the I-House already had two very huge 16mm projectors, but these projectors were permanently fixed for each room so that they could fill their respective enormous screens…The instructions for displaying this film called for two films to be concurrently projected side by side, and at some time during the presentation, they were supposed to blend together to form a single image. It was a lot of fun to practice, and then put into action, this maneuver that was a little bit difficult.
Each of us set up our seating within the auditorium so that we were seated on opposite ends of a row, and we signaled to each other when to rotate the projectors. The result of this endeavor, which was done for Sharits’ pretty simplistic picture, did not impress me very much, but I’m glad we did it because it made Robert happy. I will miss him, and if you knew him, you will as well. I’m sorry for your loss. At some point in the future, there will be a memorial. I really do hope that you will be there.
