- by Sophia Mia
Sam Gross Obituary, Death Cause – The family of the late cartoonist Sam Gross would like to extend their most sincere condolences to everybody who was touched by his work and share the sad news that he passed away in New York City yesterday. He could look back on 89 years of life. Over the span of more than six decades, Sam contributed hilarious humor cartoons to a wide variety of periodicals, including The New Yorker, Esquire, Penthouse, Parents, Good Housekeeping, and Punch, amongst many others.
The world of cartooning has been robbed of a titan, and a loving husband and father has been torn away from his family. This is the famous “Frog’s Legs” cartoon that he made, which was first published in National Lampoon magazine. He drew the comic himself. Sam’s first cartoon was published in The New Yorker for the first time the following year in 1963. To the family, please accept my most heartfelt condolences.
He was a cartoonist with an extraordinary amount of talent. After I graduated from college, one of my coworkers was his wife, Isabelle Gross, and it was via her that I was introduced to her husband’s job for the first time. We worked together for the first five years after I began my career. She gave me a collection of his cartoons, which I still hold dear to this very day, and I was grateful for her kind gift. We are deeply sorry to learn about the loss that you have experienced. During this difficult time, we are keeping both you, Michelle, and your mother in our thoughts. May the memory of him bring you joy and good fortune.
