Shirley Harper Obituary, Death Cause – According to officials with the Illinois State Police, the highway was reopened early on Tuesday morning after a number of car accidents that happened along a two-mile stretch of Interstate 55 near Springfield on Monday due to a dust storm. The incidents took place as a result of the storm, which occurred on Monday. Six people lost their lives as a direct result of the accidents.
The lanes that run northbound and southbound near milepost 76 were made available once more around six in the morning on Tuesday. At least 72 vehicles were involved in a chain reaction of accidents that took place on the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 between mileposts 76 and 78, as indicated by the records obtained by the police. At least 37 people required medical assistance and were sent to area hospitals after the incident.
The severity of the victims’ injuries ranged from non-life threatening to life threatening, according to the officials, while the victims’ ages ranged from 2 to 80 years old. According to the report provided by the office of the Montgomery County Coroner, Shirley Harper, 88 years old, originally from Franklin, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. When the report was made, the office was attempting to determine the identities of the remaining five victims.
