The victim, identified as Stephanie Dees, was a 26-year-old woman from West Meon in Petersfield, Hampshire. The women were in the process of crossing the busy 14th street on 1st avenue when they were struck by a taxi and subsequently flung into the path of an approaching cab, which caused them to be struck a second time.
