Avajo Nation is in mourning over the passing of Steven Harrison, a Diné veteran of World War II who was 101 years old. Steven Harrison, a member of the Navajo Nation and a veteran of World War II, passed away on May 10, 2023 at the age of 101. On May 10, 2023, the leaders of the Navajo Nation paid respect to the life and military service of the late Steven Harrison.
In May of 1944, Harrison entered in the United States Navy, and he served until May of 1946, when he was discharged with honor. As a result of his service during World War II, he was awarded various medals and ribbons, including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two bronze stars, and the victory medal.
Kimbeto, New Mexico, falls under the jurisdiction of the Nageezi Chapter, which is Harrison’s hometown. He was born for Tsenabahi nii and given the name Bit’ahnii.
“We hold the service of our Diné warriors to our people and our nation in the highest regard. We are grieved by Mr. Harrison’s passing, but we acknowledge that he leaves behind an enduring legacy as a result of his honorable service in the military during World War II. Speaker Crystalyne Curley expressed the sentiments of the Navajo Nation Council when she said, “On behalf of the Navajo Nation Council, we honor his life and offer prayers for strength and comfort for his family and loved ones as they lay him to rest.”
During his tenure in the Navy, he was also assigned to the battleship USS Texas. “Both the First Lady and I have the utmost regard and gratitude for the sacrifices that have been made by our nation’s veterans. During this trying time, we want Mr. Harrison’s family to know that we are thinking of them and sending our condolences.
